About Ashley
I'm a current philosophy student at St John's College, Cambridge University and achieved an A* at A-level myself. I like to help advise and teach philosophy to others in my spare time and I've done some paid mock interviews and prep sessions for Cambridge applicants in the past. When I'm not thinking about ridiculous philosophical questions, I live in Manchester with my partner and mostly look at pictures of cats.
I love philosophy, and I want to share that passion with more people. Sure, some of it is just staring into space and asking deep questions, but philosophy can change your life, and learning it the right way can turn a fun subject choice to a genuine passion. But it can be heady and difficult, full of weird phrases and books written by old men who died 200 years ago. Hopefully I can help take the edge off and make it easier to mine the joy to be found there!
I'm interested in helping anyone who wants to learn or revise A-level philosophy content over the summer break, or who wants help or advice preparing for any admissions interviews, especially for prospective Cambridge applicants where I have the most relevant experience.
I hope that being taught by someone not too much older than yourself should feel a bit less daunting and awkward, too. I know it can be a bit anxiety-inducing getting to know a tutor, and it's a lot easier to learn when you're not worried about how you come across!
Finally, I'm queer and trans (they/she) myself, so I'm very LGBTQ+ friendly and inclusive.

My teaching approach is relaxed, flexible and collaborative, inspired by the way I was taught at A-level and the teaching methods used in my studies at Cambridge. I teach one-on-one, using a discussion-based method. I believe learning should be fun and interesting without losing any substance.
Lessons last an hour, and will usually focus on particular topics you're struggling with or want help with. I'll help clarify any misunderstandings, explain content you don't understand, and advise you on coming up with your own view and how to structure this into a top marks exam answer. I can also provide tasks in the form of exam questions which we can go over in detail and discuss further in the following session, similar to how supervisions are taught at Cambridge.
If you're seeking interview preparation, these sessions will consist of a mock interview, followed by detailed feedback and advice. In the mock interviews, I try to replicate my own experience as closely as possible. I remember my sixth form giving bizarre interviews that weren't anything like the real thing: with me, you'll receive an accurate trial run to prepare you before walking into the real interview.

It's simple, Ashely is as good as it gets when it comes to a philosophy tutor. She actually understands what it's like to be a student and teaches far better than any professor I have ever had experience with. Her ideas are nuanced and helped me incredibly - 10/10
Ashley is very passionate and they know their subject well. They're a patient teacher and can explain complicated ideas in an easy to understand way to people with little to no experience with the subject. They genuinely just love to talk about philosophy and share their knowledge with the world!
