About Alexandra

I am a Law with Criminology student at the University of Manchester. I have passed all my English language exams, from PET to CPE and have studied English for 14 years now. I am proud to say that I have been one of the few people in my country that has passed the CPE with Grade A, which has been a reward for all my years of studying English.

My motivation to work with young people is primarily driven by my first career goal of becoming a teacher. While I have taken the decision of pursuing a career in the legal field, as this appealed more to me when choosing my university course, I have not given up on the idea of teaching. Alongside my academic commitment, I am a volunteer for an NGO, in which I am teaching English to two groups of Brazilian adolescents from low-income families. As a non-native English speaker, I know the importance of having someone to teach you a widely spoken foreign language and the struggles encountered throughout the learning process. Therefore, being able to contribute to their development as individuals as part of society is highly rewarding. There have been challenges to overcome, as the language barrier posed some difficulties, and as a result, I had to adapt my lesson plans to be able to provide explanations both in Portuguese and English in order to enhance the student’s understanding. Given that the lessons take part in a virtual environment, this has allowed me to improve my IT skills, particularly when creating PowerPoint presentations that would get their attention and encourage them to proactively participate in the discussions, as well and while using Zoom as a communication platform. I am proud to say that since I have started teaching them, they have advance one level, from A1 to A2, and A2 to B1 respectively, in just half a year, which represents a reward for my hard work and teaching style.

Prior to this, I have offered tutoring classes to my neighbour for his 8th grade Romanian exam, and with my help he has managed to increase his grades from a 7.5 to a 9.25/10.

As a first-year representative for my university’s Pro Bono Society, I have participated as a volunteer in the ‘Awareness Project: Stereotypes’, which aimed to provide the necessary knowledge to overcome prejudice to pupils through a virtual presentation. This has challenged my adaptability in terms of adjusting my style of communication to the audience, as we were addressing a group of pupils in the 5th grade. Considering the fact that we could not interact with them in person, and show our enthusiasm and engage better with them, I had to be creative in order to convince them to actively participate. As such, I integrated games throughout the presentation which increased their willingness to share their experiences and thoughts on the topic at hand, actively motivating them to come up with solutions and ideas that would potentially put an end to stereotyping in the school environment.

My teaching method can easily be adapted everyone's learning style!
For me, what is key is tailoring the structure of each lesson in such a way that creates a friendly atmosphere in which you will feel comfortable studying and engaging in the activities. I am looking forward to having a good and friendly collaboration, making the class enjoyable yet informative, increasing your level of knowledge in no time!

Typically, the teaching methods and lesson structure include designing a plan which cover all of the four main areas of the exams, sharing sheets with theoretical aspects of the lessons (usually PDF or Word documents), followed by thorough explanations and interactive exercises to enhance the understanding on the subject matter. Questions are welcome at all times!
