About Alistair

I am an experienced and enthusiastic teacher.
My approach to tutoring is centred on creating a supportive, professional, and engaging learning environment where every student feels confident in their ability to succeed. I take the time to understand each student’s individual needs, learning style, strengths, and areas for development, allowing me to tailor my lessons accordingly.
I believe effective tutoring goes beyond simply providing answers. I focus on building a strong understanding of the subject, explaining challenging concepts clearly, and encouraging students to think critically and solve problems independently. I regularly check understanding and provide constructive feedback so that students can recognise their progress and know exactly where they can improve.

I aim to build positive relationships with my students while maintaining a professional and structured approach. Patience, clear communication, preparation, and reliability are central to the way I work. Most importantly, I want students to leave each lesson feeling more knowledgeable, capable, and confident than when they arrived.

My goal is not only to help students achieve their academic objectives, but also to develop the confidence, skills, and independence they need to continue succeeding beyond tutoring.

About the lesson

I have extensive experience of teaching primary pupils, with a particular focus on KS2 English and Maths.

My approach to tutoring is as follows:

• Understand the student first: I start by identifying the student’s current level, strengths, difficulties, and learning goals.
• Build understanding, not memorisation: I explain concepts clearly and encourage students to understand why something works, rather than simply learning answers.
• Adapt to different learning styles: I adjust my explanations, examples, pace, and activities depending on what works best for the individual student.
• Encourage active participation: I use questions, discussion, practice, and problem-solving so students are actively involved rather than just listening.
• Build confidence: I create a supportive environment where mistakes are treated as part of learning and students feel comfortable asking questions.
• Track progress: I regularly check understanding and use feedback to identify areas that need further attention.
• Develop independence: Ultimately, I want students to become confident learners who can approach problems and learn independently.
In short: my approach is to meet each student where they are, make difficult ideas accessible, build their confidence through practice and feedback, and gradually help them become independent learners.
