About Helena Lucía

Born and raised in Bogotá. I studied Tourism and Hotel Management, worked in hotel sales for Hyatt and Wyndham and for Colombia’s largest travel group, then spent several years in England before coming home. Teaching Spanish started as something I did on the side in 2020 and became the work I like most: it’s the only job I’ve had where I can see someone’s progress week by week.

I’m organized, direct, and easy to talk to. Students tell me they stop worrying about making mistakes after the first couple of lessons, which is when the real learning starts. When I’m not teaching I’m cooking, walking my dog or exploring a part of Colombia I haven’t seen yet.

About the lesson

Most of my students want the same thing: to stop freezing when someone speaks to them in Spanish. A waiter in Playa del Carmen, a neighbour in Cartagena, a colleague on a call with the Mexico office. That’s what we work on.

I’m Colombian, I live in Bogotá, and I teach online in the Eastern time zone, so if you’re in Ontario or Quebec my afternoon is your afternoon. I’ve been teaching adults online since 2020. Before that I worked for more than ten years in hotels and tourism in Colombia and in London, which means I spent a long time helping travellers who were trying their best in a second language. I know exactly where people get stuck, and I’m patient about it.

How we work: you talk from the first lesson, whatever your level. I listen, I correct what matters, and I keep the rest for later so you don’t lose your confidence. You get a short written recap after each class: the words and phrases we used, the one or two grammar points that came up, and what to practise before next time. Lessons are 60 minutes on Zoom or Google Meet, usually once a week, and I can do 30 or 45 minutes if you prefer shorter and more frequent.

Students I work well with: beginners who want a calm, structured start; people planning a trip or a winter stay in Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica or Colombia; professionals dealing with Spanish-speaking clients or teams; and French speakers, who usually find that Spanish comes faster than they expected once someone shows them the patterns.

The first lesson is free. We meet for thirty minutes, you tell me what you want to be able to do in Spanish, I tell you honestly where you are, and we plan from there. Send me a message and we’ll find a time this week.
