About Lidia

“As many languages you speak, so many times you are a human being.” This is the direct translation of a Slovak proverb, and it reflects my enthusiasm for foreign languages. In my opinion, teaching a new language is like letting pupils discover a new personality. You pass on a new reality, culture and, in fact, a whole new world; you allow the interpretation of this new world through a system of grammar and phonetic rules. In my experience, mastering other languages has been a great enrichment and it is ultimately what encouraged me to live abroad for most of my adult years: I have lived in Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and I have travelled to Asia, South America and Europe. I am in my second year as a teacher of languages in East London. I teach French, Spanish and German across Key Stage 3 and 4, including GCSE and A-Levels. In my lessons, I enthuse pupils by using interactive and authentic materials and planning activities that intrigue pupils’ curiosity and love for languages. For example, I use VOKI to set speaking homework for my classes and monitor their pronunciation regularly, as well as songs and film to teach and set homework. Last year for International Week, I organised a series of lessons based on film trailers for the whole department. The outcome of the lesson was that pupils dubbed the trailers of European films in a language of choice. I felt a real sense of achievement when I saw how much effort the pupils put into this activity and how proud they were of their achievements. Furthermore, I am a native speaker of Italian and I support students who want to take GCSE Italian at my school. I meet them once a week and go through expectations and practising questions with them, teaching content when needed. Finally, I tutor adults privately, tailoring lessons to their needs.
