About Matthew
My name is Matthew Rainsberry. I am a professional actor based in London, having graduated from the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts with an MA in Classical Acting for the Professional Theatre in 2022 (the same course that Benedict Cumberbatch graduated from).
Growing up in Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of notable playwright William Shakespeare, I was always conscious of the importance of theatre, but never fully embraced it until I started to participate in school; in drama classes, musicals and eventually immersing myself in texts and different styles of performance.
Having Autism and moving schools because of bullying closed me off completely, but through performance, I was able to collaborate with others and boost my confidence, stretching the borders of what I thought I was able to achieve.
Acting greatly impacted my performance academically and creatively in a way nothing else has, pushing me out of my comfort zone and combining critical and creative theories and ideas in ways I otherwise would have never thought possible.
I, then, received an unconditional offer from Royal Holloway University of London where I studied BA(Hons) English Literature & Drama, specialising in Early Modern literature.
After, unsuccessfully auditioning for drama schools during the middle of a pandemic, my world seemed very small, but with the help of a tutor I found online, I was able to prepare adequately and apply myself wholly in the pursuit of being accepted. I was recalled by all the drama schools I applied to and was offered a place at LAMDA for their postgraduate program.
At LAMDA, I worked with practitioners who are working professionally within the theatre industry and as top tutors in their field: In VOICE, MOVEMENT, ACTING TECHNIQUE, STAGE COMBAT, SONG, TEXT and so much more.
Now, I have just completed two films and preparing to travel with a company to the Edinburgh Fringe after London previews.

'Acting' is the word that is used so often to represent the work we do. However, the word 'play' is rarely uttered. 'Play' is thought of as a nonsense word made only for describing the conjurings of children.
However, the thing we fail to recognise is that there IS sense in play. Children create whole worlds out of their imagination, interacting together in saying "yes" to eachother, combining ideas and bringing to life whole stories and characters with endless possibilities. At drama school, I realised that 'to act' is not your objective, rather 'the ability to behave absolutely truthfully under the imaginary circumstances'.
In my classes, we will focus on what you aim to achieve with your play, break down how we can achieve your goals and then undertake them in the most affective way possible. I will never be the one to tell you that you CAN'T achieve something, but I will ALWAYS be there to tell you how you can do BETTER. I am a MA graduate at LAMDA and I am constantly learning from my mistakes because this is the only way we can grow.
I specialise in:
* LAMDA Grades
-Acting & Public Speaking grades from all up-to-date syllabi
* Audition Technique
- Whether it is for the top drama school in the country or a local amateur theatre production, I am here to get you to where you need to be.
* Vocal Training
- Breathing exercises, Supported breathe, diction
(every voice is different and need different approaches)
* Performance Technique
- Stanislavski, Laban, Meisner, Brecht, etc.
* Text
- Contemporary, Classical (incl. Shakespeare), Poetry, Public Speaking.
- Critical theory: What does a text mean? Why does it exist? How does this affect my performance and my understanding of the text.
* Musical
- Songs and musical theatre pieces all tell a story in their own right, even if there are no lyrics. Breath and music are all part of creating sound, creating life and to share it with ourselves and others.
BUT what is most important...
TO HAVE FUN!!!
All play is built from our enthusiasm and love of creativity, otherwise, why do it at all?
