Writing is not a chore. It should, and can be, a fun and fulfilling. I teach middle school and high school students to write clear, concise, organized prose, a skill that will help them get ahead of the game in such subjects as English, History, and Science.
Why me? I don't just teach writing, I write for a living. My work has appeared in USNews & World Report, The Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, and The Miami Herald among other publications. I write and edit news stories, essays and opinion pieces.
My approach begins with the students themselves, specifically, a short essay about an exciting event in their lives, or a hobby, etc. We'll use this example to begin our exploration of writing structure and organization, word choice and use of details. The idea here is to engage the student's imagination and interest, to get their buy-in.
Students can bring in assignments in any state of completion for instruction on both writing and research. As a reporter, I am expertly skilled at both. We will create outlines and word charts aimed at optimum subject and language choices. We will explore the concept of "show, don't tell," learning to provide examples to support topics. I can help them find rich sources of information or interview subjects for more in-depth work.
Whether your child needs help mastering basic grammar, writing school reports or drafting college essays, I am here to get them to the next level.
