About Alexander
I am a graduating senior at the University of Louisville, earning a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in cell physiology. I have been a Supplemental Instructor in Biology at my university for the past three years, where I teach three lectures a week for high fail rate biology classes using worksheets, study guides, and practice exams I make myself. Because I have been a Supplemental Instructor for many different biology classes, my knowledge of concepts in biology is broad in scope. I also am an internationally accredited CRLA Level III Master Tutor, and have served as a peer supervisor for other biology tutors at my university. I have also taught topics in medicine for summer conferences at Harvard and Johns Hopkins ranging from hematology to medical ethics, and regularly volunteer as a guest lecturer for a high school health education program. I’ve taught a total of over 2,200 students, and hope to one day pursue a career in medical education.

On the surface, I’m a high-energy tutor and pride myself in retaining student interest. Behind the scenes, I carefully structure each of my sessions around the idea of cognitive scaffolding— especially with biology, establishing layers of complexity and gradually moving through them best facilitates student understanding. I prefer learning what students know about a topic, filling in any gaps and erasing misconceptions, then reaching a new level of understanding. In a lesson, I might start off by asking big-picture questions about the mitochondria, zoom in to finer details like enzyme/substrate names, and then ask challenging questions about altered reaction rates or the effect of disrupting a specific process. By the end of each session, students are always able to answer complex challenge questions about a topic.
