About Shem

I'm a physics and engineering educator with 15 years of classroom teaching experience in AP and IB Physics, alongside a professional background in manufacturing and product design within entrepreneurial businesses. That combination means I bring both rigorous exam preparation and genuine industry experience to every lesson.

My connection to neurodivergent and gifted education is personal as well as professional: I am neurodivergent myself, and neurodivergence runs throughout my family. Over the past 25+ years, that's translated into real, hands-on experience teaching, working alongside, and supporting neurodivergent individuals, including students with ADHD and autism. I also co-founded a company focused on AI-driven assistive technology, which keeps me closely engaged with how neurodivergent learners actually process information and where traditional teaching methods fall short.

I hold a BS in Physics and a BS in Physics Education, and I'm currently pursuing a Master's in Mechanical Engineering. I've taught students ranging from middle school through early college. Whether you're aiming for a top score on the AP or IB Physics exam, building a foundation in engineering principles, or looking for a tutor who will genuinely adjust to your learning style, I bring both the technical expertise and the teaching experience to help you get there.

About the lesson

Every student thinks differently, and my own background shapes how I teach as much as any credential does. I'm neurodivergent myself, and so is much of my family. I don't use a fixed script; I figure out how a student actually processes ideas, then adjust the pace, explanations, and examples around that. Sessions are meant to be engaging. It's hard to learn anything when you're bored, so I keep lessons active rather than lecturing.

A typical session is driven by what's needed that day: if there's an exam or a homework problem causing trouble, we start there and work backward until I find the actual gap. If there's no urgent deadline, we move ahead into new material or dig into a hands-on project applying what we've covered, drawing on my engineering background, which tends to make physics and engineering stick far better than worksheets alone.

That flexibility is really the goal of every session: meeting the student where they are that day, not where a syllabus says they should be.
