About Lauren

Improv theater and language learning collided for me somewhat unexpectedly, during a study abroad program that paired language classes with local drama workshops. That accidental combination taught me how much spontaneity accelerates real fluency compared to slow, cautious practice. Formal graduate study later gave structure to that discovery, blending performance and applied linguistics together deliberately. That same blend still shapes how playfully I approach teaching quick, expressive learners today.

Working with actors alongside naturally extroverted students means embracing energy and unpredictability rather than trying to control or slow it down. I never discourage bold, imperfect attempts, since hesitation tends to hold students back far more than actual mistakes do. What I find most rewarding is watching a student fully commit to an improvised scene, forgetting entirely that they're even practicing a second language. That total immersion in the moment often marks genuinely fluent, natural thinking.

I stay closely connected to performance-based Spanish through ongoing improv practice and theater-adjacent language work myself. This keeps my teaching genuinely energetic and rooted in real, spontaneous communication rather than rehearsed formality. Lessons often lean toward whatever scenario or prompt sparks the most genuine, unscripted reaction. My hope remains constant, that students leave thinking in Spanish, not just translating into it.

Actors approach language the same way they approach a script, wanting to feel and embody words rather than just memorize them correctly. Extroverted quick-thinking learners share that same appetite, often preferring spontaneous practice over slow, methodical drilling. Improv style exercises open most sessions here, pushing students to respond instantly rather than pause and mentally translate first. Grammar still gets addressed, though it emerges naturally through correction during live, in-the-moment speaking practice.

As spontaneity builds, students take on short improvised scenes, reacting to unexpected prompts entirely in Spanish without scripted preparation beforehand. Actors particularly enjoy exploring emotional tone and delivery, discovering how phrasing shifts meaning depending on how something is actually said. Quick-thinking learners instead thrive on rapid-fire question and answer exercises, building comfort with fast, unrehearsed exchanges. I keep corrections light and immediate throughout, folding them naturally into the flow of the scene rather than stopping it entirely.

I remind students often that hesitation, not mistakes, tends to be the real obstacle to natural-sounding Spanish. Practicing under spontaneous pressure builds genuine quick thinking far better than rehearsed, predictable dialogue ever could. Scenes and prompts stay tied to whatever genuinely excites a student's imagination that day. My focus throughout remains dynamic, helping students think and respond in Spanish, not just recite it.
