About Anna

Hello! My name is Anna, I'm a student at the University of Bristol studying History, just beginning my third year of University. I'm from Brighton, and my family now live in South America, so I have a basic level of Spanish as well as an English education. I studied at Brighton and Hove Sixth Form College and received an A in History, an A in English and an A* in Classics at A2 level. My true academic passion is history, but I also love english literature and find classical studies fascinating.

I have a year of experience of private lessons teaching English and teaching music (singing and guitar). I like teaching young children, but I am also very happy to interact with adults.

One of my favourite things in life has always been stories, and I believe that the finest story of all is still being enacted; the story of our world. I believe that by studying the past, it is possible to understand the truth of today, and in that, the beauty of how things have come to be. For me, history is not only an exciting subject but also incredibly relevant to understanding how human society came to be the way it is today.

My hobbies include running, surfing, reading, making music and cooking. I'm a very laid back person, and I love being creative and apply this to my teaching and learning.

The first most important thing for me is meeting the student, so we can personally get to know each other and our personalities. It is useful for me, in this initial meeting, to discover the students strengths and challenges, in particular if there is any specific topic or assessment which they are struggling with. I can then begin to build my sessions around these challenges and set goals for improvement.

It is important for me to establish clear goals, so that I can work with the student in each session towards this. This could be strengthening a specific skill, such as writing essay introductions, or developing a greater understanding of a topic.

I like to use a scaffolding method with my students, which involves laying out the basic ideas of a topic and then building from this. I find mind-maps can be a very useful way of learning as they are both creative and visual, and it is an enjoyable task for the student.

I also believe that it is important to be flexible to the needs of the individual, and this involves paying attention to energy levels so as not to undertake tasks which are too demanding and keep learning realistic and fun.

At the end of my sessions I like to give the student a challenge or puzzle to take away with them so that they remain focused on the new knowledge we are learning and inspired to go on.
