The core approach is Conceptual Fluency over Rote Memorization. Instead of handing out formulas to be memorized, the focus is on why the formula exists.
To ensure every student "sees" the math, these specific techniques are used:
The "I Do, We Do, You Do" Method: 1. I Do: Modeling the problem-solving process out loud.
2. We Do: Solving a variation together as a class to build confidence.
3. You Do: Students tackle problems independently while receiving targeted feedback.
Error Analysis: Instead of just marking an answer wrong, we "perform an autopsy" on the mistake. Understanding why a calculation went off the rails is often more instructive than getting it right the first time.
A standard 60-minute math session is built for momentum:
The Bell-Ringer (5 mins): A quick "number talk" or a logic puzzle to wake up the brain.
Concept Launch (15 mins): Introducing the day’s objective with a real-world hook (e.g., using probability to explain game shows).
Guided Practice (20 mins): Interactive problem-solving, often using "vertical non-permanent surfaces" (whiteboards) where students stand and collaborate.
Independent/Small Group Lab (15 mins): Differentiated work where students move at their own pace.
The Exit Ticket (5 mins): One single problem to solve before leaving, which tells the teacher who needs extra help tomorrow.
Pattern Recognition: Helping students see that math is a language of patterns, not a list of rules.
These classes are for anyone with a sense of curiosity.
