About Luke

I am a Junior Biology major in the pre-medical program at Virginia Commonwealth University! I am highly extroverted and love speaking with others no matter their level of social comfortability. Not only this, but I am involved in multiple student organizations, the most notable being VCU HOSA- Future Healthcare Professionals of America. I complete cancer research at the Trani Life Sciences building at VCU, and I love doing research for them! I strive to meet others as this is one of my favorite parts of life. It is even more exciting to get to work with others, and that is part of the reason I’d like to tutor more often. I am deeply immersed in Biology and Medicine, and I would like to pursue a career in Healthcare! It excites me to speak with others who are passionate about learning, and I hope that others would be just as excited to work with me :)

About the lesson

My typical approach would be by PowerPoint slides; however, these visuals are only aid for my teaching. I enjoy conversation and questions, and so I encourage a communicative environment when teaching others. A plan I would begin with would depend on a student's chapter and/or necessary support in a subject, but I would begin with a presentation. This would allow for demonstrative slides that could be shared accompanied by my lecturing whilst opening the floor for questions. Towards the end of the lecture, I would direct the students towards an open discussion of questions they have. Lastly, I would provide students resources to use to enhance their ability outside of class and my teachings. What sets me apart from other tutors would definitely be my comfort around others. I taught as a swim coach for 3 years, and I learned to be very comfortable around people from that experience. I’m very humorous but also very very understanding that everyone is different and requires different levels of teaching. Patience is one of my virtues, and I would never want to harbor any environment that is not supportive and helpful. My lessons would be for biology students and introductory collegiate level biology classes. For example, I received a 4 on the AP Biology exam in high school, and above a 93 in every biology course I have taken in College (Foundations of Biology 1, Foundations of Biology 2, Viral Discovery, Biology 110, and Cell and Molecular Biology). I have exceeded in those classes while also completing chemistry courses such as organic chemistry and other various courses.
