About Derek
I graduated from PK Yonge DRS in 2007. I earned my AA in 2009 from Sante Fe College, my Bachelor's in English from UCF in 2016, and my Master's in Literary, Cultural, and Textual Studies from UCF in 2019.
I began teaching 8th English during the 2020-2021 school year, where I worked through pandemic restrictions and hybrid classes. In the 2022-2023 school year, I taught 9th and 10th grade English. Currently, I'm a media specialist/librarian at an Elementary school.
Additionally, I'm a voracious reader who enjoys history books and fantasy/sci-fi. I also like reading literary analysis and watching video essays about books and film. I'm also big into Dungeons and Dragons. In other words, I'm a big nerd.

Teaching begins with assessing the student's knowledge and needs, typically with a diagnostic exam or conversation.
Lessons begin by stating the target goal and then going over background knowledge. Then, during direct instruction, students will be given academic vocabulary that's relevant to the lesson, followed by a text that will be read and analyzed. Typically, some kind of activity or gamified work will follow. Finally, knowledge will be tested with a quiz or short response.
I can teach any student who needs help with English in general, reading, writing, or research. I can work with students in any level of grade school, as well as college students at the undergraduate or graduate levels. I prefer older students.
I'm a real human who loves rock climbing, surfing, and concerts. I have two cats, and I enjoy cooking as well as video games. I like to connect with my students on a personal level to make the tutoring process run more smoothly.
