About Matthew
I have lived in Japan for about 18 years, and I can speak Japanese very well. I can explain grammar in Japanese, whilst I teach my students. For example, 'fukisoku doshi' is how you say irregular verb, in Japanese. I have recently returned to Cairns for the first time in almost 10 years, as I spend time with my parents and brother, who I have not seen very much for the past 20 years. I think I can be very helpful teaching Japanese students living in Australia. I can even help with Australian slang words and phrases, which I think can be very difficult for students who have only learnt English in Japan. I think the park on the Esplanade is a nice place to study, but I am open to conducting lessons in any place where my students feel most comfortable. I am happy and bright, and try to make my lessons fun. I also write and illustrate children's TESOL books, designed for Japanese kids learning English. My books are for sale in Japanese Duty Free Stores, in Cairns. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu!

I like to start my lesson by asking my students "What's new?". This gives my students a chance to talk about the things that they have been doing in their lives. This is not always easy for beginners in English, but I feel is very important. After the students have made their effort, I will correct mistakes, and write down the correct way to say the things that my student is trying to tell me. After this, I bring a dialog created for life in Australia. For example, it can be a conversation between my student, and an Australian person who you may meet in an everyday conversation. For example, ordering food in a restaurant or cafe. Arriving at a Medical Clinic for an appointment, or another kind of situation which people in Australia face every day. After I have explained the dialog, and ask my students to repeat, I will ask comprehension questions. I have found that students can be comfortable with a lesson plan like this, as it is simple, and easy to follow.
