About Laurel
I am a qualified B.Ed. and SACE Registered Teacher with Psychology and Mathematics as my majors.
I have a passion for teaching Mathematics.

I was recently teaching second grade at a Private Greentown School in Hangzhou, China. Currently I teach online English (Phonics) part time.
I have taught at Special/Remedial School, I have experience with the adapted CAPS: Technical Occupation. I have also taught at various mainstream Schools . I had the general responsibilities of Teachers: Lesson Planning, creating a Positive, Disciplined Learning Environment, Workshops on Curriculum Learning Programs, Learner Assessment/Achievement, Administrative Work, and set up Remedial Interventions. I have and still privately teach extra mathematics classes to students in Grade 1, 3, 4,5,6,7,8 , 9 and 10.

I have taught a diverse range of learners in my community, for example learners from different linguistic backgrounds and learners with learning barriers like: Dyslexia, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Behavioural Disorder, Epilepsy, Hard of Hearing, Mildly Intellectually Disabled, ADD, ADHD and Specific Learning Disability. I am bilingual and can teach Mathematics in English or Afrikaans.
I pride myself in being exceptionally patient and will persevere, taking great initiative in figuring out solutions until the learners have mastered the skills and at the same time making them feel really special. I believe that a teacher plays a pivotal role in each child’s performance, regardless of what a child’s circumstances are.
I think for students to master Mathematics they will have to go back to basics, the rules(key concepts) and break it down. They also have to overcome pre-sets ideas or fears regarding maths. I believe that anyone is able to do maths, they need to figure out what learning approach works best to accommodate their individual; learning needs.
My teaching philosophy would be that the best learning takes place in a positive, artistic environment with laughter and fun.
