As a student in an academically competitive environment who used to struggle with English, it wasn't until one of the best teachers in the state transferred into my school. As a general consensus for students in high school, I had felt as if after Year 8 English, students are simply expected to get better and raise their standard of writing without being provided the necessary tools to get better. After this teacher I genuinely began to enjoy English as a subject and felt like I actually knew what I was doing. This sense of autonomy over your own learning is something I want to personally pass on to students because I genuinely understand the struggle behind a subject as tedious as English that requires the proper tools to navigate it and achieve high marks in as it is ultimately subjective. As a person who was towards the bottom of the grade to end up in the top 30 of an academically rigorous school, I believe I have the capacity to help students actually enjoy and perform better in English.

About the lesson

During lessons I would initially establish a rapport with the student, understanding what the student wishes to learn, what the syllabus requires of them to understand and what texts the student needs to study. As this is the first lesson I would start off with teaching how to evaluate questions and analyse texts which has a more general application and thus focus on short-answer questions. Between the initial lesson and the next I would then do my own research into the text and from my own study methods and what I have learned I will teach how to structure complex essays, what markers are looking for and what is required to maximise marks and achieve in the top band for students.
