About Gail Xunqi
My teaching experience in Singapore and the UK has shown me what I can do to empower students. In 2018, I volunteered as an English and Humanities tutor at a girls’ reform home in Singapore and taught
English as a second language at a tuition centre for immigrant students. In both experiences, the students often had no one to support and encourage them to achieve their potential. This cemented my resolve tobe a teacher who empowers the powerless. The experience at the academy enabled me to understand the structure of education in local schools. In 2020, my covid break was fruitfully spent in Singapore
teaching English as a second language. Planning an online curriculum motivated me to think of creative ways to engage with my student especially when she was disengaged. We would listen to podcasts,
watch general knowledge videos and do desk exercises together before and after the session. The student I taught achieved a distinction in her English qualifying tests to university with only 2 years of moving to Singapore with minimal English. During this time, I also had the privilege of observing my sister’s online lessons at the Anglo Chinese Independent
School, the highest-ranking International Baccalaureate school. I gained invaluable experience of how to facilitate online-learning and applied that in my own teaching.
I was once a student like you who was on a website similar to this one, probably looking for someone help me achieve the grade I desperately need. I've been there and I can't say that it's always been fun. But I had really encouraging teachers who pushed me along the way and went beyond their means to make learning fun for me. I am working towards being one of those teachers and doing the same for you too.

I utilise Zoom and Microsoft Teams for my lessons and my lessons will typically be up to 50 mins and not any longer. I have experience in tutoring English as a second language abroad to immigrant students in Singapore and to Singaporean IB and GCSE students. English literature lessons are generally for students at secondary school to sixth form level and Math for primary school level.
