About Kaitlin
I completed my Bachelor of Science at Otago University with a Major in Ecology and a Minor in Environmental Management. This year I have also completed the Wildlife Management diploma. My passion for the environment and wildlife is growing as I continue studying. I am now in the planning and research stages of looking at Banks Peninsula kororā foraging distributions and behaviour.
My hobbies revolve around the outdoors including bush walks, climbing waterfalls, or at the beach photographing and surfing. My goal is to be involved with conservation or wildlife management work within the marine or terrestrial environment.
I am passionate about photography and videography which ignites my interest in science communication. The desire to share knowledge and inspire those around me has driven me to work as a guide at Pōhatu Penguins and become a member of the education team on the NZSLT board. As someone who has faced challenges in the past and benefited greatly from support, I am eager to extend a helping hand to others in their learning journey. My goal is to support them in not only achieving their educational objectives but also make the experience a fun and enjoyable one.

At the beginning I would ask for the student's current understanding of the topic. This would enable me to Identify any specific challenges or areas of difficulty.
I recognise that learning new things can be overwhelming and too much information at once is both stressful and counterproductive. Therefore, I would allocate time slots for each section of the lesson. I would also break down the session into manageable segments.
There are various engagement strategies I would use in order to ensure the sessions are engaging and interactive. This includes using open ended questions so that the student has a chance to think critically and utilise their current knowledge. Using real word examples and hands on exercises would also help to foster a collaborative learning environment. I am very adaptable so can modify the lesson plan based on the student's progress. I would also adjust teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
At the end of every lesson we would summarise what the session went over. At the beginning of sessions, if it suits the student, we would also go over a recap of the previous session.
Overall, I am very flexible in both teaching style and time allocation based on the student's needs and progress. I would adjust the teaching methods to create an effective and enjoyable learning experience. This would be my first real position as a tutor although I have experience of supporting peers in both college and university with their learning. I am happy to help with Biology lessons from year 9 through to year 13. I am also available for those completing their undergraduate studies in Ecology.
