Welcome + Quick Needs Check (5–10 min)

Greet student and set expectations: “Today we’ll practice reading and English skills.”
Quick diagnostic:
Read a short passage aloud (or take turns reading).
Note strengths (fluency, vocabulary, comprehension).
Note challenges (word accuracy, pacing, decoding, sentence meaning).
Ask 1–2 questions:
“What kind of reading do you like?”
“What feels hardest right now—new words, understanding, or reading smoothly?”
2) Learning Goals for the Session (2–3 min)

Choose 1 reading goal + 1 English goal.
Reading goal examples:
“Improve decoding of multisyllable words”
“Understand main idea and details”
“Read with smoother phrasing”
English goal examples:
“Use past tense correctly”
“Build sentences using subject + verb + object”
“Improve vocabulary using context clues”
3) Warm-Up: Phonics/Fluency/Vocabulary (10–15 min)

Pick one (based on student level):

A. Fluency Warm-Up

Silent read 1 minute → partner/corrective read 1 minute.
Choral reading of a short paragraph (teacher models).
B. Word Work (Decoding)

Target a pattern from today’s text:
long vowels, vowel teams, prefixes/suffixes, common blends
Quick practice:
Segment and blend (e.g., “pre- / view” → “preview”)
Read 8–12 example words
Apply to 5–8 words from the passage
C. Vocabulary Pre-Teach

Select 5–8 high-utility words from the text.
For each word:
meaning in student-friendly language
say it + use it in a sentence
quick check: “Which word fits this sentence?”
4) Guided Reading (20–25 min)

Step 1: Teacher Modeling (2–5 min)

Teacher reads aloud, modeling:
phrasing
expression
attention to punctuation
“think-aloud” comprehension (“I know this because…”)
Step 2: Shared Reading (8–10 min)

Student reads sentence-by-sentence with prompts:
“Sound it out,” then “Does it make sense?”
“What do you think the character will do next?”
Step 3: Independent/Partner Read (7–10 min)

Student reads while tutor listens for:
accuracy, pace, and expression
Tutor notes error patterns for later practice.
5) Comprehension + Discussion (10–15 min)

Use a simple routine (choose 2–3 questions):

Main Idea: “What is the text mainly about?”
Details: “Name two details that support the main idea.”
Inference: “What can we infer from this part? Why?”
Text Evidence: “Point to the sentence/phrase that tells us that.”
Optional structure:

“Say it + Prove it”:
Student states an answer
Student points to evidence (sentence or line)
6) English Skill Practice Connected to the Text (10–15 min)

Choose one skill focus tied directly to what students read.

Examples:

Grammar in context
Identify tense (past/present/future) from sentences in the text
Transform sentences (e.g., present → past)
Sentence building
Write 3–5 sentences about the passage
Include a target structure (because, although, first/then/after)
Writing mini-task
“Summary in 3 sentences”
“Character description using 2 adjectives + 1 reason”
Vocabulary usage
Use 3 target words in new sentences related to student interests
7) Targeted Practice Loop (5–10 min)

Use the most common errors observed:

If decoding/accuracy issue:
practice the exact word patterns from mistakes
If comprehension issue:
reread the paragraph and answer again using evidence
If grammar issue:
do 5–8 short “guided” transformations or sentence completions
8) Review + Exit Ticket (3–5 min)

Student answers 2 quick items:
“Today I learned ___.”
“One reading strategy I used was ___.”
Tutor provides brief feedback:
1 strength + 1 next step
Assign a short, doable practice task:
10 minutes of reading
or 5 vocabulary sentences
or a short written response (3–5 sentences)
Session Template (Quick at-a-Glance)

5–10 min: Needs check / recap
10–15 min: Warm-up (fluency/phonics/vocab)
20–25 min: Guided reading (model + shared + independent)
10–15 min: Comprehension discussion
10–15 min: English skill practice linked to text
5–10 min: Targeted error practice
3–5 min: Exit ticket + homework
Tutor Notes: How to Keep Students Engaged

Use a “model → try together → independent” rhythm.
Praise effort and strategies (“You used context clues!”).
Keep text difficulty at “just right”:
student can read most words with support
Make practice relevant to interests (sports, games, hobbies, stories).
Optional: Differentiation by Level (Choose one approach)

Beginner

Short sentences, heavy word work, frequent read-aloud
Focus: decoding + sentence meaning
Intermediate

Vocabulary and comprehension strategies
Focus: main idea/details + correct grammar in writing
