About Karen
During my time as a Reading Partner, I helped foster a sense of community in my reading center that reached beyond the classroom. A lot of my students were struggling with things in their home lives that made focusing hard for them and affected their confidence in their ability to perform. I found that talking with my students about the things in their life that they enjoyed, such as favorite animals or superheroes instead of just trying to be strict about completing their lessons, helped them to open up and they were able to flourish. When they first came to the reading center they were all shy and embarrassed to have to be there, but after a little over a month they began helping each other and greeting each other in the hallway. All of my students saw improvement in their school work. Some of their parents and teachers even reached out to me personally to let me know of the changes they had noticed in my students. Stories such as those are why I want to do my part to help strengthen the literacy of the next generation.

Sessions will focus primarily on reading comprehension and literacy. Each session will begin with me reading the student a story that they will have the option to choose. Students will participate in different activities each session to focus on letters or sounds the student struggles with to help boost their confidence in their literacy. Students will then be guided through an age-appropriate reading with frequent breaks to ask questions to help build reading comprehension. Students will end each session by choosing a book report to complete at home before their next session. Book reports vary depending upon grade level, but will be simple enough that the student can complete on their own after reading the story aloud to their adult, such as drawing a picture of their favorite scene in the book. Experience with students grades K-3rd.
