About Sophia
I’m currently completing my MSd research dissertation at the University of Essex, where my dissertation focuses on children’s attention and how it supports early learning and language development. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Indiana University and have also completed graduate-level coursework in Clinical Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counselling at Illinois Institute of Technology.
Alongside my studies, I’ve worked in both research and applied settings supporting children’s learning and development. I’ve conducted cognitive development research with toddlers, presented findings at an undergraduate psychology research conference, and worked directly with children through behavioural therapy and educational assessment roles. These experiences have given me a strong understanding of how people learn, as well as the patience and communication skills needed to support students effectively.
I take tutoring seriously and aim to create a professional, supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their academic confidence. Whether students need help understanding psychological concepts, improving essays, or developing research skills, I focus on clear explanations, constructive feedback, and practical strategies that help them succeed.

My approach to tutoring is relaxed, supportive, and tailored to each student. I know that psychology and academic writing can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I focus on breaking things down into clear, manageable ideas and helping students build confidence in their understanding and writing.
In lessons, we usually work through difficult topics together, discuss key studies and theories, and practise how to apply them in essays or exam questions. I also help students improve their essay structure, develop stronger arguments, and build good research and critical thinking skills. If students have coursework or drafts, we can go through them and work on ways to improve clarity, analysis, and academic style.
Lessons typically last about an hour, but I’m flexible depending on what the student needs. Some sessions might focus on understanding a tricky topic, while others might be more focused on planning essays or reviewing written work.
I studied Cognitive Developmental Psychology and have experience working in academic research, including with cognitive developmental psychologist Dr. Linda B. Smith. This experience helps me show students how psychological research works in practice, not just in theory.
My lessons are mainly for A-Level and university students studying psychology, or anyone who wants to improve their essay writing, research skills, or confidence with academic work.
