About Finlay

I’m Finlay, a Natural Sciences student at the University of Leeds, where I study Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. I achieved A*s in A-Level Maths and Chemistry and an A in Physics, as well as Grade 9s at GCSE.

I have experience tutoring students in Maths and Science and really enjoy helping people understand topics they may initially find difficult. I’m good at breaking complicated ideas down into clear, manageable steps and adapting my explanations depending on how each student learns best.

Having completed my GCSEs and A-levels recently, I have a strong understanding of the current courses, exam styles and the pressures students face. I can therefore share not only subject knowledge, but also the revision methods, exam techniques and approaches to difficult questions that helped me achieve my own grades.

I aim to create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, while still challenging them to improve. My goal is to build genuine unde

About the lesson

I offer personalised GCSE and A-Level Maths tutoring, with lessons tailored to each student’s ability, weaknesses and target grade.

I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE Maths and an A* in A-Level Maths, and I now study Mathematics as part of my Natural Sciences degree at the University of Leeds.

My lessons focus on developing a genuine understanding of the maths rather than simply memorising methods. I break difficult topics down into clear steps, then use worked examples and exam-style questions to build confidence and independence.

For GCSE students, I can support both Higher and Foundation Maths, whether the aim is to secure a pass, move up several grades or target an 8 or 9.

For A-Level students, I can help with Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics, including more difficult problem-solving questions and exam technique.

I also focus heavily on identifying where marks are being lost, avoiding common mistakes and understanding exactly what exam questions are asking for.

Perfect! Excellent start where Finlay identified specific weaknesses for focussed sessions, and commenced teaching and learning in one of those. Ended with a concrete plan fit improvement between now and the summer.

Finlay's response
We had a really successful first lesson and identified the students strengths and weaknesses. We then made a plan for future lessons and also covered some of the basics of quadratic equations, which was a key weakness identified.

My daughter had her first lesson with Finlay last week, he helped her understand the concepts in Physics and Chemistry she was struggling with most. She said he was really helpful and went through any bits she was still confused about. I’d recommend anyone looking for a tutor to go for Finlay.

My son has had help from Finlay with both maths and science over the past few months. It’s really boosted his confidence and he actually enjoys the subjects more now. The extra support has made a big difference and we’re really thankful for Finlay’s help.

My son has been having weekly online tutoring with Finlay in both GCSE Maths and Combined Science since Year 10. Finlay takes the time to explain things properly and makes sure my son really understands before moving on. We’ve noticed a big improvement in his confidence and the way he approaches his schoolwork. It’s been a very positive experience and we’re glad he’s had Finlay’s support.
I’d highly recommend him.

Finlay has been tutoring my daughter in Year 11 once a week for her GCSE maths over Google Meet. He went through her mock papers with her and picked out the topics she struggled with, then explained them really clearly. It’s made such a big difference to her confidence and understanding - she’s found the sessions really helpful. I’d happily recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor.
