About Kelsey

Hi! I'm Kelsey, a 24-year-old Psychology and Counselling student with a passion for working with children and making learning a positive, enjoyable experience.

I'm currently studying towards a Bachelor of Applied Social Science at SACAP, with a particular interest in child development, neurodiversity, and educational psychology. My long-term goal is to become a registered educational psychologist.

I have 18 months of experience working with children of different ages and abilities, including my role at Vergelegen Homework Centre, where I provide academic support across various subjects, with a particular focus on Mathematics.

I matriculated in 2020 with seven distinctions and also hold a 120-hour TEFL certification. Additionally, I've completed short courses in child and adolescent development, counselling children and youth, and neurodiversity.

I've always loved working with children, and one of the most rewarding parts of tutoring is watching a learner go from feeling frustrated or unsure to proudly understanding something they previously struggled with.

I believe that patience, encouragement, and creativity can make a meaningful difference in a child's learning experience. My aim is not only to help learners improve academically, but also to build their confidence, independence, and belief in their own abilities.

At Steady Steps Learning, I believe that every child learns differently and that Maths should be engaging, accessible, and enjoyable!

I offer personalised, one-on-one Mathematics tutoring for learners in Grades R–7, with lessons tailored to each child's individual strengths, challenges, and learning pace. My approach is neurodivergent-friendly, and I strive to create a patient, encouraging environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence.

Lessons are interactive and incorporate educational games, hands-on activities, visual resources, and movement breaks to keep learners engaged. A typical session includes a short check-in, a fun warm-up, guided teaching and practice, a movement break, and a quick activity to reinforce what we've learnt.

Foundation Phase lessons are typically 45 minutes, while Intermediate Phase lessons are 60 minutes, with flexibility depending on the learner's needs.

Lessons are conducted in English, in person at the learner's home in the Somerset West area.

I also offer a free 30-minute introductory session to get to know your child, discuss their learning needs, and explore how I can best support them.
