About James

I’m an enthusiastic, patient teacher and tutor with a proven track record of working with students who make fantastic progress and achieve excellent results! I’ve taught across all key stages at secondary level and was Head of A-level English Literature for four years. I’ve also been an examiner for the English Language GCSE for four years.

About the lesson

I have six years experience as an English teacher in a London secondary school and have taught across all key stages, from age 11-18. During my time as Head of A-level English Literature the subject was consistently rated as outstanding and in the top 10% of schools nationwide in terms of the progress pupils made throughout their studies. I’ve worked with a wide range of students to provide one-to-one support, including off track students at both GCSE and A-level as well as students with additional support needs. My work as an examiner for GCSE English has enabled me to provide targeted support to students, highlighting the particular skills and approaches that will enable them to maximise their potential in exams.

I believe in developing positive, nurturing and respectful relationships in order to empower students as learners. I treat students as individuals and cater to a range of learning styles to ensure they can learn in a variety of interconnected ways, through talk, reading, and writing. I tailor tutoring sessions to individual needs and draw upon teaching techniques and resources from my extensive experience as a classroom teacher and examiner. I encourage students to develop a love of reading and writing and combine this with a practical approach to learning skills and developing exam techniques. My students make excellent progress because I value them and the work they produce. I provide constructive verbal and written feedback to students that celebrates their achievements, and I give small, structured targets that I monitor carefully to ensure that students are invested in the progress they make. I’m happy to help with any aspect of English that students require, be it exam skills, literacy, coursework, presentation skills, or working on literature set texts.
