About Maria
Hello! I'm Maria Sandim, a bilingual Brazilian who learned English at 8 years old when I moved from São Paulo to Doha, Qatar. I am now a FSU undergraduate pre-med student hoping to help as many people as I can in this challenging path to mastering a new language. Contrastive Phonetics – I break down “tricky” English sounds by mapping them to the closest Portuguese phonemes, then use minimal-pair drills (e.g., sheep / ship, beach / bitch) so students hear and feel the difference. Chunk-Based Fluency – Instead of isolated vocabulary, we practice high-frequency “chunks” ( “Could you clarify…?” ) that Brazilians actually need at work or university. Task-Based Immersion – Every lesson ends with a real-world micro-task: ordering coffee, pitching a project, or debating a news headline—always tied to the student’s goals. Data-Driven Feedback – As a trained research mentor, I track error types in a shared doc so progress is visible and measurable. What Sets Me Apart: Brazil-to-U.S. perspective: I learned English at age 8, so I remember the obstacles and can explain fixes in Portuguese when needed.
