About Sian

I am passionate about maths and helping people to do better in exams. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the transformation in motivation and self-belief that comes with improved understanding and skill level. I am a semi-retired, ex-CEO, Electrical & Electronic Engineering Graduate, who loves maths and tutoring. I first started maths tutoring when I was 21 (many years ago!) and more recently I have been tutoring for five years. I have tutored an actress, a composer and a University Professor. I have experience of home-schooling my son through GCSEs and A level (who was accepted to his first choice University). My pricing reflects my belief in a level-playing field in education. Tutoring by experienced, motivated tutors should be available to all. There is a lot more to being an excellent tutor than being good at maths. "Until we get equality in education, we won't have an equal society." Sonia Sotomayor "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela "The most fundamental attack on freedom is the attack on critical thinking skills." Travis Nichols Conclusion of study by UK charity, Teach First: "inequality is holding children back from reaching their full potential" Analysis showed that: "Two in five (38%) pupils from the poorest postcodes do not pass Maths GCSE(1), nearly twice as many as those from the richest postcodes (20%)... In maths, 13% of the poorest pupils get grades 9, 8 and 7 - which are aligned with previously graded A*s and As - compared to 26% of the richest pupils." (August 2019) University : - The City University London - BSc (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering (including 18 months industrial training) [2:1] Other Qualifications : Licentiate to Practice Homeopathy from College of Practical Homeopathy, London

Lessons will be according to your needs. As we each learn maths in a unique way, one-to-one means the approach can be geared to your pace and learning process. I teach online, with a collaborative whiteboard (so we can both see and write on the same screen). Generally, there will be an emphasis on solving problems, understanding the language of exam questions and making best use of time in the exam. Apart from essentials like times tables and required formulae, emphasis will be on understanding and improving problem-solving ability and not memorisation.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    Maths was my first love.
Private tutoring started at school, helping others with maths homework. That was when I realised how much some highly intelligent people dislike and struggle with maths.
Every topic you struggle with in year 5 will most likely come back to haunt you in year 6 and beyond - with added complications. The sooner you can fill in knowledge gaps the better.
Maths is easy when you know how. If you are fortunate enough to have a tutor, ask for help with and face up to those things that are a mystery and watch maths get easier as you go on.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Give me pure maths every time - algebra, calculus, trig, not stats sampling methods!
I don't like having to memorise things. So apart from things like times tables, and the area of a circle which are essential to know I prefer to work things out from first principles.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My dad could teach anyone anything. He taught a one-armed woman to swim once.
My son had a tutor who had such grace inside and out that he would gladly get out of bed, however early, to speak with her, even if he had to do it in Spanish.
He had a physics tutor who prepared exceptionally well for each lesson with videos and examples that made the topic fun and easy to understand.
Then there is Amram Yousef, whose teaching methods were baffling to me, until exam time came and I could finally see it. Pure genius!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Observant, kind, patient, good communicator, good at making connection, constantly learning and improving.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I learned nothing new in maths from age 11 to 13. So boring. Thankfully I had my calculator to explore.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Making "Large Data Set" interesting in A Level. :/
For me some A level questions are challenging. Some GCSE grade 9 questions are challenging too. And that is part of the fun of maths. Getting stuck, allowing oneself to be stuck and giving oneself the chance to think, to experiment and to become unstuck. This is when we are building our experience and confidence. This is when we are learning.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I wish that the system was not designed for a certain percentage of students to fail. To be told one has failed after all that effort and time spent doing maths, since you were 5 years old, is cruel.
Imagine instead, if maths GCSE were like a driving test where if you can demonstrate that you have certain skills and understanding you pass, and we are delighted for each person who passes.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

Please don't call me Prof, or anything that sets me higher (or lower) than you in any way.
I am a mum, who understands the pressure you are under. A mum who has had a lot of practice helping people to achieve the highest grade possible, in the time available.
