About Nicola

I have many years of experience in training, coaching and teaching, both online and in person, working with learners of different ages, backgrounds and abilities. I am currently building on that experience by formally training as a Primary Teacher across the National Curriculum.
I have supported learners to develop their reading, comprehension and grammar, and have worked with speakers of other languages to improve both their conversational and written English. I have also helped learners develop the confidence to begin reading in English, recognising that confidence can be just as important as technical skill when taking those first steps. I also have experience supporting children and young people with SEND, including learners with a range of communication and literacy needs. This has reinforced the importance of adapting teaching to the individual learner and meeting them where they are on their reading journey.
My wider professional experience in training and coaching has taught me that people do not all learn in the same way. I adapt my approach to the individual, explain ideas in different ways when necessary, and aim to create an environment where learners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and trying again.
I believe that reading, literacy and confident communication unlock doors. Whether your goal is greater confidence at school, tackling academic texts, improving your English, or making everyday reading and communication easier, I am here to help you move through whichever doors are between you and where you want to be.

About the lesson

My lessons are for anyone struggling with literacy and/or reading. That might be a primary-age child who needs a patient adult to listen to them read and build their confidence, an older pupil who is finding academic reading difficult, or an adult who would like to improve their literacy for everyday life.
My teaching is tailored to the individual learner and what they want to achieve. There is no single approach to literacy that works for everybody, so I begin by finding out what the learner can already do confidently, where they are finding things difficult, and what will make reading meaningful to them.
With primary-age children, I work within the National Curriculum and support the approaches being used in school, while giving the child the individual time and attention that can be difficult to provide in a busy classroom. Sessions can include supported reading practice, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and discussion. We can also develop oracy through purposeful conversation, practising how to express an idea clearly, listen and respond to others, ask questions and explain our thinking. I want children not simply to decode the words on a page, but to understand, question, discuss and enjoy what they are reading.
For older pupils and students, we can focus on the particular demands of academic reading: understanding unfamiliar vocabulary, identifying important information, making sense of complex texts, developing inference and critical reading skills, discussing ideas and explaining or justifying a point of view. We can also work on finding strategies for approaching material that initially feels overwhelming.
Adult literacy sessions are led by the learner's own goals. We can work with the kinds of reading, writing and spoken communication that matter in everyday life, whether that means forms, letters, instructions, online information, workplace materials or simply becoming a more confident reader and communicator. There is no judgement and no assumption about an adult "should" already know.
A typical lesson begins with a clear, achievable aim. We will work through reading or literacy activities together, talking about how we are approaching them rather than simply looking for the right answers. I use discussion, examples, modelling and plenty of opportunities to practise, and I adapt the pace as we go. We finish by recognising what has improved and identifying the next step.
Most importantly, I believe that struggling with a particular way of learning does not mean someone is incapable of learning. If one explanation, text or approach isn't working we'll work together to find another door into the idea. My aim is to help learners develop the literacy, oracy and confidence to understand, express themselves and communicate increasingly independently.

Details

Reading practice with children can be arranged as two 30-minute sessions rather than one full hour, helping to keep the sessions manageable and enjoyable. The hourly rate covers both sessions, which can be arranged at convenient times.

Face-to-face lessons are available within a reasonable travelling distance. A small contribution towards public transport costs may apply depending on location and will always be agreed in advance.
