About Adam
I'm a young freelance musician, passionate about sharing the joys of music with students ranging from total beginners to university undergraduates. My background is both academic and practical - after receiving an A* (and full marks) in Music A Level in 2010, I was offered a place to read Music with a Choral Scholarship at Clare College, Cambridge. Although I opted instead to change subjects to English Literature, I sang in the Choir for two years, which helped reinforce high standards of musicianship. I also completed an interdisciplinary Finals dissertation with Robin Holloway (Emeritus Professor of Music) for which I received a 1st. I'm grateful for the opportunity these experiences gave me to combine a nitty-gritty approach to technical detail with a larger cultural perspective on the subject. This enables me to contextualise my teaching in cultural currents in Literature and the visual arts - providing a less 'tunnel-visioned' experience for all students, as well as helping those looking to study it at university! After graduating from Cambridge, I completed a Masters degree in Collaborative Piano Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, for which I received a DipRAM for a high distinction in my final recital, and went on to spend a year on the music staff at English National Opera. I hope that the thrill of having worked on performances at the highest professional level will inform my teaching, and help to bring the subject to life!

My hands-on experience working as a coach and pianist in opera houses informs the way I communicate the expressive potential within music theory to my students. There's nothing worse than an approach to this subject which reduces it to 'mere technique', and it's much easier to remember the ins and outs of theory when they're connected to the emotional impact of actually hearing music. With this in mind, I incorporate time to listen to and explore particular works as far as possible within my sessions. That said, I'm well acquainted with the ins and outs of getting through exams and assessments too - and I can provide targeted help preparing for Theory Grade exams, A-level or GCSE. I can also guide more advanced students through the process of applying to university, including Oxbridge interview practice. Let me know what your needs and current abilities are, and I'll be very happy to tailor a course of study to suit you. :)

Adam is a passionate and highly skilled teacher who takes the time to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each student, communicate these to parents, and tailor his teaching accordingly. He is warm and inviting, and his lessons maintain a good balance of discipline and fun. He goes out of his way to recommend music and local concerts and he doesn’t hesitate to provide extra advice whenever appropriate. We highly recommend him, just as he came highly recommended to us through our local community.
I'm delighted to write this recommendation for Adam who has been my piano teacher for the past year. As an adult student returning to the piano after many years, I'm glad that I found a teacher who is encouraging, patient and excellent at teaching piano techniques.
Adam always gives good advice on how to best practice when I'm on my own and also offers insightful guidance on artistic expression encouraging me to think more about how to interpret music. One of the aspects I also like is that Adam is helping me to find pieces that resonate with my musical taste.
I'm fairly new to music theory and Adam's in-depth knowledge and methods of teaching music theory have helped me to better understand chord progression and to experiment with chords to enhance some of the pieces I'm playing. Understanding the underlying structure of the pieces also helped with learning how to play them.
Adam has a genuine passion for music and I also enjoy our conversations about the history of music. In summary, he is a pleasure to work with and I warmly recommend him.He is always very kind and is never mean and he is very supportive of my learning needs.
