What sets me apart as a tutor is the unique combination of being personable, engaging, and patient while at the same time having a deep understanding of the subject matter and holding my students to high standards.
My teaching methods and techniques are tailored to the needs of the student I'm working with. When I first meet a student, I'll get to know them and assess what their needs and learning style are. From there, I decide what approach would best serve them. That said, I typically incorporate examples, engaging activities, feedback, and the chance for my students to use critical thinking and construct their own knowledge.
I have supported people with writing at all levels, from 3rd grade to adult, and most of my career has been spent as a middle school classroom English teacher. My extensive teaching experience has given me a wide repertoire of teaching strategies and materials.
If I were teaching writing, for instance, I might show the student a video or slideshow about the difference between active and passive voice and then ask the student for key ideas they picked up, giving them the chance to ask questions. From there, I would first have them do practice exercises to distinguish the difference between active and passive voice, reviewing the answers with them. Then we'd do a fun activity, creating sentences in active and passive voice. Finally, I'd identify sentences in their writing that could be changed from passive to active, have the student work them out, and then offer them feedback on their revisions.
