About Chris
I've been drumming for 22 years, ever since I won a rhythm contest at school. I was hooked on drums right from the very first time I got behind the kit. I had a great teacher at school who taught me how to play Big Band jazz and swing and before I knew it I was playing in the School Jazz band. As I got older my musical tastes leaned more towards rock, punk and grunge, and I have played in lots of fast and heavy bands- although I've never lost my jazz roots! To this day I still love playing all sorts of types of music, as well as what I've already mentioned, ska, reggae and world music with all sorts of weird and wonderful percussion always help to develop my skills. Being a versatile and varied drummer is how to make it in the business and the more genres and styles you're willing to learn, the more fun and rewarding it can be

I teach the same way I was taught- focus on the techniques that matter and listen to the student- teach them what they want to learn and now what I want them to learn! No matter what level of drumming you're at, learning the very basics of counting and keeping time, hand and eye cooidernation are essential. I would much rather someone learnt to play a slow, basic 4/4 beat with very little complicated fills with great timing and fluency than attemptmore advanced rhythms and fills that sound sloppy. So patience is the key with drumming- learn a master it, move on to the next one. Don't run before you can walk. It took me 6 months of solid practise of learning the basics and 1 day it clicked and I was able to take my drumming to a whole new level. I always teach students the same way I was taught, and have seen many young people become very talented players very quickly.
