About Toby

My name is Toby Matthews, I am 24 years old and have been drumming since I was 9. I was self-taught for many years and in my teens started taking lessons. I was fortunate enough to find a teacher who was adaptable and supportive enough to nurture what style I had already developed and reinforce it. This was invaluable and I have taken that same approach to my teaching.
I play in a few bands, performing live and recording in studios. I am capable of playing various different styles including rock n roll, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, you name it! Drumming is the best way of tuning in, clearing your head, finding your groove, and loosening up. Most of all it's fun, joyous thing to do, and I hope I can help spread that joy.

About the lesson

I am a very friendly approach to teaching - there is no wrong way to play the drums, what's important is that you/your child is able to express themselves and enjoy it. My primary job is simply to facilitate and nurture whatever talent and personal voice you have. I am very flexible to your specific needs - for example if the goal is to find your voice and channel your expression through drumming then great! We'll have fun and I am there to support you. On the other hand if you want to work through the grades, I have completed all the grades myself over the years, and so have an in-depth knowledge of the ins and outs of the courses available and how to approach them.
I love drumming and want to share that passion with others!
