About Megan

I teach voice because I find great purpose in empowering people to discover the beauty and uniqueness of their own voice and how that can be used in music to express ideas, emotions and experiences. I am also passionate about talking to people about how to look after their voices so that they can take care of their instrument.

I have four years of teaching experience and have been a voice instructor in various contexts. I received my Bachelor of Music in South Africa and had a small private studio. I then moved to the United States for three years. Whilst there, I received my Master's in Vocal performance at Missouri State University and worked as a voice instructor at the university. After completing my studies, I stayed on in the US for another year, working as a voice instructor at the local theater and at a college. I was also a part of the Ozarks Lyric Opera chorus, as well as a member of various choirs and ensembles.

I have been a solo mezzo-soprano for ten years and still actively perform. These performances have included recitals, concert solos and both principal and comprimario roles in operas.

Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees involved courses on pedagogy. Voice methodology included studies on the anatomy of singing, various methodologies and pedagogies, and training in French, German and Italian diction. I took Advanced Vocal Pedagogy during my Master's which expanded on my knowledge from Voice Methodology and included more intricate studies about the voice and pedagogical approaches.

About the lesson

Lessons are personalized based on the background and goals of the student. They are also age appropriate (taking into consideration how the voice functions at different ages), as well as suited to the learning style of the student. I am classically trained and use this as a basis for teaching basic technique, but am able to adjust my teaching to various genres. I train both soloists and students who sing in group singing activities such as choirs or musical productions. Lessons are open to anyone who wants to build and explore their voice and musicianship, whether they want to pursue it as a career one day, or purely for the love of singing and music. I have worked with young students just beginning their musical journeys, university students pursuing music in various capacities, as well as adults wanting to start something new, or continuing to pursue their passion for music.

Lessons are either 40-mintes or 60-mintes. The first section is technical exercises, used to focus on various aspects of the voice. In the second part of the lesson, we work on songs and repertoire. I prescribe repertoire but am also open to suggestions if the student wants to work on something specific.
