I’ve had 30 years' experience teaching at all university levels. I’ve learned how important it is to be patient and approachable and to use your valuable learning time productively. I’m able to clarify complex events and concepts in plain English and to assist with your comprehension and writing – but, above all, to share a fascination with politics, government, and history, inspiring you to go further in your studies. I’ve had extensive media experience, so I can assist students and researchers who want to get their messages across to the public, as well as communication, media, and journalism students who want a better understanding of politics and government. I’m the author of four books and many peer-reviewed articles. (Look up my Google Scholar profile.) My aim is to understand your learning needs first, set goals that work for you, and then proceed through topics or exercises that are most helpful for you right now. I’m skilled at making sense of ideas and events (historical or current), and talking about them in ways that are good-humored and non-scary. I can give feedback on written assignments. The aim is always to help you get the academic results that you want.

Perfect! Grant is an exceptional tutor. When I first reached out to Grant for help with my PhD proposal, I only had a rough idea of what I wanted my project to be. But through his patient guidance and deep knowledge of politics, I was able to craft a clear and coherent proposal over the course of 6 weeks. He provided honest, actionable feedback on my research questions and proposed methodology, and listened to my concerns with great empathy. I could not have completed my proposal without his help. If you're looking for someone to guide you through your academic journey, Grant is the tutor to build a relationship with.
Perfect! I have been studying with Grant for over a month now. After being out of school for several years, I wanted to start reading again. Since I wanted to learn philosophy, I thought Grant would be a good choice. Over the last several weeks, having Grant provide accountability for my readings and then discussing them with him has made me feel like my brain has woken up! I have gained more insights about the world around me, which has reinvigorated my excitement for acquiring new knowledge and wisdom. Grant is a great tutor, very well-read, and has been very supportive of my unique study goals.

I had the privilege of being taught by Grant for a politics paper at Massey. I gained a great deal from that paper, and I often find myself drawing on the knowledge imparted. When I reflect, I would say that Grant leads his students to knowledge. A guide of great texts, with an expansive knowledge which is conceptually broad, and historically deep. I especially appreciated Grant’s clear and balanced way of presenting the concepts and topics. Without a doubt my most memorable paper at Massey.
I' ve known Grant since he was finishing his PhD at the University of Auckland in the late 1980s. He's been working as a lecturer in public policy at Massey University's Albany campus in Auckland since 1993, where he rose to the level of associate professor. I'm aware that he taught at undergraduate and masters level, and supervised doctoral students - so he brings much teaching experience to his work as a Superprof. I'm a professional editor, and have copy-edited two of Grant's very readable and well-written academic books. He explains complex political concepts clearly, and brings enormous breadth of reading to his work and teaching. Grant looks at politics with fresh eyes, which in recent years has gained him a following as a political commentator.
Grant was my PhD supervisor for about five years and he did a great job in coaching me over this period. His patience, expertise, and personalized teaching approach have made a significant difference in my PhD journey. Grant, is doing a great job when it comes to breaking down complex concepts into easily digestible parts and this is making the learning not just effective but also enjoyable.
Also, as an international student, Grant helped me through to understand and adopt to the new education system in New Zealand.
Highly recommended.
