About Berta

I feel rewarded when I can help another individual.

I am a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science Degree and with 11 years of nursing experience. Part of my professional career and volunteer work has focused on behavioral health and community nursing, including roles as teacher, advocate, and case manager. The various jobs that I performed, gave me the opportunity to interact with clients of different ages and cultural backgrounds. This, I found to be the best part of my job. Having lived in Guatemala, Central America, the United States, and Germany; has given me not just international experience, but has made me more culturally aware. Fluent in Spanish and proficient in German, I not only enjoy speaking and reading books in these different languages, but also assisting individuals who need help in learning them.

In nursing school.

As I nurse, I always have to teach patients about their diagnosis, diet, medications and maintaining a healthy lifetly. At home, I review school assignments with my son. I teach him Spanish and English.

About the lesson

I first find out what the student needs help with. I inquire about the student´s learning style: does the student learn best by repetition, through visual materials or by writing things down. I ask further questions to determine if I am the right person that can help the student.

As a nurse, I have worked with patients of different ages.

I once held a position as Minority Health Care Coordinator in a center for immigrants and refuges, where I not only organized health workshops, but also taught some of them.

I would tell the student that he/she needs to feel comfortable and at ease with the tutor before continuing any further tutoring sessions.

I attended a one day nursing refresher course at Boston College in Massachusetts.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should try to think through math problems and questions that ask them to think and reflect, before talking to teachers about their needs.
