About Luz

I have taught English for twenty six years from elementary level to University level. I was selected English teacher of the year in 1999. I was promoted to English supervisor/facilitator. After retirement I worked as academic coach to English teachers, Science teachers and to professors who taught other subjects in different parts of Puerto Rico. I have a masters degree in English as a Second Language and 18 credits in Administration and Supervision.

I have always been passionate about teaching. Planting and sharing the seed of knowledge with others, is my passion. What I love the most about teaching is that one to one contact with each student. I also love to to guide and motivate students to achieve their goals through the use of different strategies, techniques and materials that will help them tackle the gaps they encounter while dealing with language acquisition. Teaching gives us the opportunity to keep in constant learning as we teach others.

I began teaching in Puerto Rico as a bilingual teacher in 1978. At that time, due to lack of English teachers, only a high school diploma was required for the position. However, I had already completed 60 credits in education. Afterwards, as I worked in school, I continued studying until I completed my BA and later, my Masters degree in English as Second language

I have a masters degree in English as a second language. However, I am also fluent in both Spanish and English. I am certified to teach any subject at the elementary level K-6. I also have certification to teach English from K-12.

About the lesson

For working with a new student first, we need to assess his/ her knowledge in the given subject. By assessing the student's knowledge in the area we would have a clear idea of the student's strength and weakness in the subject to teach.

I have worked with all types of students from Kindergarten to university students. I can say that many of my students were highly motivated and eager to learn a second language. However, I had other students who lacked enthusiasm to learn anything. Nonetheless, it is the teachers job to find ways, strategies and techniques to arouse students' motivation to learn and that is what I did.

An advice I would give a student looking to hire a teacher in any expertise is to focus in the teacher's experience, and secondly, the teacher preparation. This is so, because anybody can have a doctors or masters degree, but having a passion for teaching is something that only great teachers have.

An event I am fond of is when my five year old granddaughter comes home and I get to become her teacher by reading to her and watch her use critical thinking skills while answering questions about the stories or texts read.

1. What are my achievement goals?

2. Will this course, service or lesson help me to achieve my future goal or job

3. Is this investment pertinent to what I want to achieve in the future?
