About Benjamin

I have a great passion helping students in the learning process, and helping them succeed in their goals. I try to live the lyric from Unthought Known by Pearl Jam, "Dream the dreams of other men, and then you will be one's rival." Whether it is through teaching, counseling, or tutoring, my dream is to help you succeed in your dreams.

I first started tutoring as part of the TRiO grant Student Success Program at Incarnate Word 2001-2004. As an adjunct faculty member I taught sociology from 2012 to 2020 and psychology from 2021-2022 at the University of Phoenix, Our Lady of the Lake University, Texas A&M University - San Antonio, and the University of the Incarnate Word.

I have a B.A. from the University of the Incarnate Word in both Psychology and Religious Studies, a M.S. from the University of North Texas in Sociology, and most recently a M.A. from St. Mary's University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

I also have over 400 hours of Internship Experience applying what I have learned in the classroom to help people in need. I have received special trainings in tutoring students with disabilities, tutoring study skills and time management; play therapy; counseling with body image issues, psychological trauma, and grief & berievement. I am certified in telemental health, and providing psychotherapy for persons with psychological trauma. I also in the process of become a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate.

I was a recepient of the 2005 Amy Freeman Lee Award and Patrick Keating Psychology Award, and a recepient in 2019-2020 of the Baptist Health Foundation Scholarship and the Pat and Dorothy (Lehr) Legan Scholarship (both competative academic scholarships). I am member of the Texas Counseling Association, as well as the National Counseling Honors Society. I have received excellent evaluations from students regarding my teaching.

(concealed information)

I got started teaching by emailing local colleges and universities and asking their sociology departments directly if they had any openings.

I was trained as a tutor and worked as a tutor for the Student Success Program in my undergraduate. I have a graduate degree in sociology and have taught sociology for 8 years, and have an undergraduate degree in psychology and if all goes well should be officially graduated with a degree in clinical mental health counseling this August. I also have taught pyschology for a year as well.

First, briefly interviewing the student, asking things about their learning style, the area they need help with, the class and assignment information, etc. Then helping the student on the specific area they need help with, researching if needed, to help them further and in detail.

I have taught almost entirely college students, though I have taught "Sunday school" for a few years, and they were mostly middle school students. I have taught some adult learners, though mostly I have taught students who were traditional college students. Demographically, the students I have worked with has been diverse, though has had larger percentage of Hispanic/Latinx, and female students. I also have worked with students with disabilities and first generation college students.
