About Emily

Hi! It's so nice to see that you're interested in SAT tutoring. My name is Emily, and I can't wait to help you reach your goals and become a testing strategy expert. In 2018, I graduated from SUNY Stony Brook, and my first job out of college was math tutoring! That lead me to becoming an SAT Math tutor, and more recently I've worked closely with a high school to bring an SAT prep curriculum to their students. In 3 years, I've created a long list of strategies and tips that will lead you to SAT success. I look forward to sharing them with you!

I love making you love whatever we're working on! It's wonderful that you're looking for tutoring- that tells me that you want to grow! Being a part of that process is what I love about my work. When I was in high school, I was "not a math person," and seriously doubted what I was able to do. Once I changed my mindset about how I approached topics I wasn't confident I could tackle, I realized that when I hit a roadblock, I should simply back up and go down another road. What progress is made staring at the roadblock?

I got my introduction to being an educator when I got hired as an algebra and geometry tutor with Saga Education. I discovered that I enjoyed being a positive adult in a student's life, and also enjoyed doing work in service to them. I continued tutoring with the same organization as a virutal SAT math tutor. That position lead me to turning toward curriculum and content development, specifically for SAT preparation.

I graduated from SUNY Stony Brook in 2018 and earned a B.A in Psychology- summa cum laude. In fall of 2018, I began working as an algebra and geometry tutor with Saga Education. In summer of 2019, I was a virtual SAT math tutor with Saga Education and the Collegeboard. In fall of 2019, I began writing SAT prep curriculum for 11-12th grade students at a high school.

When I first meet a new student, I introduce myself and share some relevant information. I express my excitement toward working with them, and frame the session with positivity. I'll then ask the student to share some infromation about themself, personal hobbies and interests, as well as attitudes toward school and specific topics. I ty to guage their attitudes so I can strategically decide how to approach and frame topics and quesitons.

I've worked with high school students. I worked face to face with 9th and 10th grade students, and virutally with 11th grade students. As a curriculum writer, the content served 11th and 12th grade students.

I would advise the student to consider- realistically- how much effort they're going to put into their practice. Growth is made by putting in the time and brain power, so remember that tutoring is a commitment between the student and the tutor. Also, think about the style of learning you enjoy. Do you like a more hands-on tutor? Do you prefer to prepare indepently, then go over your work with a tutor? This will help you form the idea of the tutoring experience that you want to commit to, making it easier to find.

Recently, my dog got excited about the huge snowfall that hit my area! She dove straight into a pile of snow, and had pieces of it stuck to her nose. Her fur is light, so she nearly blended in!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
This is a great question! It's important for students to reflect on their learning style and how their brain approaches a problem. This can help the tutor explain questions in a specific way that is relevant to the student's thought process. It's also important for students to reflect upon what they enjoy about math, for example, and what they dislike about it. Usually, the "dislikes" are mindset related, and your tutor can help you strategize around them.
