About Lisa
My service includes setting out a prep strategy customized to the student, followed by tutoring. I worked for Kaplan several years ago as an SAT instructor but now do only private coaching and tutoring. I have a B.S. in Mathematics and a M.S. in Statistics, so am a bit stronger in Math than English. I like to work with students and their parents to come up with a study plan that best meets the student's needs in terms of their target schools, the amount of time they have to prep, and their preference in terms of prep type - tutoring vs. following a book vs. using web-based or phone apps to do their prep, supplemented with practice tests.
I really enjoy helping students to develop a SAT prep plan that they can buy into, to improve their comfort with the SAT test, and of course, help them improve their scores. I have two teenagers in high school (a freshman and a senior) and understand the challenges involved with fitting SAT prep into an already busy schedule.
I actually started tutoring back in high school - I tutored a friend's younger sister in Geometry. After that, I graded math papers in college and was a teaching assistant in graduate school for a "Statistics in Society" class. I have always enjoyed helping others. Most recently I came back to teaching SAT prep courses part time to help make extra $ for my kids college tuition!!
I have a B.S. in Mathematics and a M.S. in Statistics. I have worked as a data analyst, manager of other analysts, proposal writer, proposal manager, and currently a project manager, so I have used both math and english/writing in my jobs over the years. I also worked part-time for Kaplan for 9 months as a SAT prep class instructor back in 2016-2017, but prefer to work with students one-on-one, rather than teach to a large class. I also do not consider myself to have expertise in the optional essay so would advise a student to seek out a tutor with particular expertise there, if they plan to take the essay. I also have 2 children (17 and 15 year olds) and enjoy working with teenagers and previously volunteered as a Merit Badge Counselor and as the Advancement Chair in my son's Boy Scout Troop. I have also volunteered at my kids' schools in various capacities, and have a CORI on file in our local school system.

Our first session includes an overview of the SAT, discussion of colleges they plan to apply to, and prior scores (if they have taken the SAT). If they haven't recently taken the SAT I would have the student take a practice test during our first session. Once they complete that practice test we would discuss their scores - it helps us to understand where they are, at baseline, and if particular areas need work. After that, I recommend getting started with the areas most frequently tested on the SAT first, along with areas they didn't test well on, followed by areas not as frequently tested, time permitting. By the end of the first session we would have a study plan outlined for that student, which may include weekly tutoring, or could be partially or completely self-directed study by the student, depending upon their time, budget, and preferences. We may also start in on specific topics during the first session, if the student does not need to take a practice test during the session.
In the Kaplan classes that I taught there was a broad range of students (SAT scores ranging from 900-1400 out of 1600). In my one on one tutoring I have worked mostly with students starting with baseline scores of 900-1150 out of 1600.
Find a tutor with SAT test prep teaching or tutoring experience. Also make sure you are comfortable with the tutor, can buy into a study plan and devote time to your prep. And, think about the way you prefer to study - working through paper based lessons on your own, working alongside a tutor, using a web application to study, or a phone application in small bursts to practice a few problems each day.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In addition to the advice above, think about the following: What are my target colleges? Do I need/want to take the optional essay? When will I take the SAT test? (Tie your prep closely to the test date - I recommend beginning your prep 3-4 months before the test to allow you to work through lots of questions and also take several practice tests.)
