About Cherie

I am a graduate from Harvard (Class of 2019!) I received an MCAT score of 522 and an SAT score of 2370. After taking standardized tests and studying up for them, I believe that structured test prep with plenty of practice tests and someone to hold yourself accountable to is the key to success. I know how nervewracking these tests can be, and it is my goal to help you all accomplish your dreams by testing well!

I have a lot of experience as a tutor and a teacher. I was a teaching fellow (meaning I taught 2 sections of students) at the Harvard Extension School for an organic chemistry class and did one on one teaching there. I have also taught classes for ESL students and taught citizenship classes. I love helping friends out with schoolwork or understanding concepts, so I hope that I can do that with you too!

I love teaching. I like getting to know students and being patient. I like explaining concepts and helping others talk through problems. I hope to meet new people and learn about your lives as we get to know the material!

I started teaching with my little sister, helping her to learn math when we were small! I really enjoyed teaching her, and then also branched out to helping friends with homework.

I have taken both the MCAT (score: 522, 99th percentile) and the SAT (score: 2370).

I have also taught biochemistry classes at Harvard and citizenship test/ESL classes in Boston Chinatown.

I usually start out by asking them what they would like to get out of our tutoring sessions and what their goals are. I also like to ask how they learn best. Then, I like to talk with them through what my vision is for the learning process. After that, we make a schedule that works with theirs and get started!

I have worked with high school students, college students, students who are less familiar with English, and even students over the age of 40 and 50.

I think that I would look for someone who is open and has teaching experience/experience in the area that you are looking to learn - just because being a student in the subject first is the most important part of being an effective teacher! Then, I personally prefer patient, kind, and friendly teachers!

This past summer, I went to Turkey to visit a good friend. We went to an island and rented bikes for an hour. We wanted to bike up a really steep hill and it was so hilariously difficult to do so - we ended up biking extremley slowly while laughing and sweating a whole lot :)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about their time constraints - how frequently do they think is feasible for them to be tutored with their schedule?

What are your goals? What do you want to get out of tutoring?

Is tutoring what will help you to reach that goal of yours? Or is there something else that might help you - prep books, spending more time with the material, etc.?

What are you willing to pay a tutor?

What is your learning style? Do you think having a tutor will fit into that learning style (interactive, visual, sometimes auditory)?
