About Carolyn

I got started in teaching because I come from a family of educators - my maternal grandmother, mother, aunt, and sister were all teachers. I actually decided I was going to skip the family tradition and become a lawyer. In my junior year of college, I realized it was my calling too and changed my major. I never looked back or regretted it. I miss the classroom and the students every day.

I am going to start with my background as a parent. I raised two children - one was advanced in her learning and I had to ensure that she was appropriately challenged and the other struggled to learn to read and needed additional supports (she is a voracious reader now and a teacher herself). I helped to develop a program in an elementary school that brought in adults to read with students and give them the extra time reading that they needed. I trained the "reading partners" and held parent nights to share what we were doing in the program. I was a part of math nights that did the same thing but I did not develop those. I have extensive training in literacy and my masters in literacy as well. I have training in working with students with autism and quite a lot of experience in putting what I learned and know intuitively into practice. I have taught the "new math" and understand how and why math education has changed. I taught in a self-contained, inclusive classroom where I partnered with my teammates to flexibly group students for literacy and math based on assessment data and student needs. We saw all of the students as ours and not your class and my class. In 21 years as a teacher, I was trained in many aspects of education but the most important was my classroom experience with the students.

About the lesson

It's important for me to get to know a student before we begin the learning work. The first session is about sharing favorite things, chatting and playing a game. Not having the first session begin with work reduces the anxiety and builds trust. By this point I would have gathered all of the data I need from others - classroom teacher, parent, report cards/test results if there are any, etc. Then I begin the "interview" with the student. Using reading as an example, we would read non-frustrational and fun books so I can evaluate what I personally see. We have an honest discussion about what is difficult for the student. I share some very basic brain research (I taught this extensively in my classroom) and mindfulness strategies to help understand that children are never "dumb." We talk about the expectations of tutoring and what our roles are. We start slow so we can go faster. I meet with parents to let them know what I see and what strategies I will use to work with their child.

I worked with capable and talented students throughout my career. Some of them were on the autism spectrum, some were accelerated, but they were all gifted! I have had students fighting leukemia and cancer, students who were homeless, students who lost a parent, incredibly shy introverts and very outgoing extroverts, students with attention disorders and others with behavioral needs, students who suffered from anxiety where coming to school was a true terrifying experience, students from all parts of the socioeconomic scale, students who moved away and moved back into my classroom within one year, students with very involved parents and others whose parents were working two jobs and not available to help at home.

Before hiring a tutor, make sure you spend time talking to the person. Having a relationship where both people are comfortable is as important in the tutoring process as the skill set the tutor has.

In my retirement, I opened an antiques store which started with a brick and mortar store and is now on line. In my brick and mortar store, I enjoyed my interactions with customers very much. One day a mom came in with her 8 year old daughter, Maddie, and we became fast friends. Maddie saved her allowance to shop in my antiques store and eventually her little brother did the same. We had the best conversations each time she came in about life and her purchases.
