About Andrew
I have taught Introductory Psychology for more than 20 years, winning multiple national awards for my teaching during that time. Realizing that understanding the details of psychology first requires that students see the "big picture" of why the various concepts and theories in psychology are important, I will help students learn the details of this course through applications to a wide range of "real life" settings.
I got to teach Introductory Psychology in graduate schools 22 years ago and loved the experience. It was great helping people learn this difficult information, and I decided to make college teaching my career.
I have a PhD in psychology and have been teaching Introductory Psychology, in addition to several other psychology courses (including statistics, research methods, and organizational psychology).

I will talk with them and see where they are having problems with the class. Once we can target the specific information that is difficult to understand, we can begin to talk about situations in "real life" that apply that difficult material. From there, we can break down the material so that it is easier to understand.
I have worked with students deeply interested in psychology, and others who were simply trying to pass the class and move on. Most of these students were in college classes, though I have worked with high school students in both the AP and non-AP psychology course as well.
Be sure the teacher can explain the information with applications to real-world situations and events. Psychology can be extremely theoretical, which is important, but understanding the applications of psychology is what will ultimately help you master the content of the course.
A student in my class, who was working really hard but still stuggling with some of the material, come to my office for help. In that conversation, I never once "told" them anything. Rather, I kept asking them questions to answer, and in the process of answering those questions, she was able to being to understand the material, well enough to get an 'A' on her test the next day!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to be as precise as possible with what information is hard for you, and why it is hard for you. Simply saying "I don't understand" makes it difficult to pinpoint the problematic aspects of the information that you are trying to learn. In addition, be able to explain how you've tried to understand the material. That will give your tutor a better sense for why that information is hard and some ideas about how to help you master it!
