About Phoebe

With over 20 years of experience in photography, I bring both technical skill and a passion for helping others discover their creative voice. My background spans photojournalism, branding, portraiture, and style coaching, giving students a well-rounded perspective on both the art and business of photography.

I believe photography is as much about connection and communication as it is about cameras and lighting. My teaching style is supportive, collaborative, and confidence-building — designed to help you grow your skills while developing your unique style. Whether you’re brand new to photography or looking to refine your craft, we’ll learn together in a way that feels inspiring, practical, and personal.

Currently offering classes in digital photography only. Located in the St. Louis, Missouri area, or online for digital and lighting classes.

I was asked to teach by a school in St. Louis and by an individual who wanted to learn fashion photography. I fell in love with the process!! I love working with individuals as well class room settings.

I started my photography career in grade school learning film photography and mass media. I continued to learn with each camera as they evolved through time. I am self taught beyond that hard have learned from mentors, working in film production in NYC for 6 years, and building my own business having a full time career in photography for over 16 years.

About the lesson

First we will get aquanted with what is most important to gain from our experience together. This gives us a platform for success.

Then I create a the number of sessions agreed upon, curated for the level of experience, and students goals.

for instance beginner class

- settings of the camera what they mean and the visual expression / photo of each setting.
- framing: leveling and framing your subject to tell a story, depth of field and rule of thirds.
- how digital cameras work, history and current mechanical functions, this enhances a students understanding of what is happening inside the camera.
- photo excursion, creating images using provided settings in multiple lighting situations. How to get the shot no matter what!
- I usually end my series with an event of some kind (gallery show, printed top 2 images etc)

One on one adult lesions, camps, after school programs as well students in a class room.

My advice is to find a teacher you click with. Being comfortable and able to recognize the skills you already have is essential to Maintaining interest and building knowledge that leads to success.

I recently taught a group of 15 students at a junior high school in St. Louis. This was part of a program called, looking through the lens of African-American children. This Was an absolute passion project as I worked with kids not only teaching them the basics in how to use a camera but how to recognize their own perspective of the world and how it communicates to the broader public. This led to a gallery show that was seen by the public and the students pride and surprise to be so honored in a display of their work was one of my greatest joys.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
before contacting a teacher I believe it is important to know exactly how much time you want to commit to the process. Also knowing what your budget is is essential to creating a program that will work for you. Also knowing what you want to learn and what you want the end result to be I believe is the key to success for both parties. How to know what the end result will be is asking yourself a series of questions: what will I be able to do at the end of the course that I can't do now? What will I have learned that will enhance my ability? What type of teacher do I need - structured, - fun and playful, - focused and methodical?

I do custom packages for specific areas of focus (fashion photography - providing a whole experience with modals, make up and education, nature wild life excursions, etc)
