About James

I am a master photographer with four decades of professional experience and a published photographic artist with work accepted by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the 1st renown museum to accept photography as an art form.

My Studio is fully equipped and designed to be an inspiration to any person wanting to expand their skill and ability as a photographer. My tutoring will help you to achieve this goal. I love photography and will share the passion with you.

I started teaching in the early 1990's for Adult Education classes given at Martha's Vineyard High School, and have continued doing so through the years at various venues.

[I also taught video production at the Wampanoag Tribe for the State of Massachussetts.]

I was in-house photographer for Vivitar Corporation, which was at the time a large camera, lens, flash, etc. manufacturing company. They also put me through additional education at UCLA in photography to supplement my TV/Film degree.

I have four decades of experience in all aspects of photography, to include commercial work for large companies such as Estee Lauder, work for events for companies such as Lotus & Boston Scientific, over a thousand weddings, thousands of portraits, postcards, posters, art, etc.

About the lesson

I discuss their interests in photography (portrait, landscape, etc.)

I find out their desired goals from taking photography lessons.

I try to learn what level they've already achieved in order to best advance their skills.

I ask about their equipment so I am prepared to teach with their equipment in mind.

Many levels from teenage kids to adults of all ages. I mentor a former Doctor of Psychology and a retired Boeing 777 pilot for the last several years.

I'm a photography teacher, and select a couple of others to meet and talk with. A personal connection is always best.

I love and have a passion for photography. I think the people I mentioned that I mentor right now show me their gratitude with their return of enthusiasm as they grow as photographers. But I'm fond of seeing each student advance in their photography passions.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Possibly you find yourself photographing the same subjects most frequently and this tells you your main interest to which you'd like to improve your knowledge and skills. Possibly you simply want to feel you're in control of your camera and equipment, instead of always being on auto pilot. Knowing thyself as best you can is always an advantage.

He has a deep passion for this form of art. As a workshop leader, James brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his workshops. With over 35 years in the industry he knows what he is talking about! He has a hands-on teaching style. We were both hearing and seeing the topics at hand with short mini 10 minutes “lectures” followed by practical hands-on demonstrations in his beautiful, well equipped studio. He makes room for questions and will navigate the directions of the session accordingly to the topical concerns of the participants.
