About Kathleen

I have been teaching Math for 23 years in New Jersey. I have taught both 5th and 6th grade math including advanced math as well as basic skills. I enjoy working with students of all levels and helping students succeed in math.

I enjoy helping students grow as learners. I want students to be successful. The WOW moments are when students make connections and show what they know. Teaching allows me to help students develop into independent thinkers and every day is different.

I come from a family of educators and I jsut enjoy being around children. My dad was a Philadelphia teacher for 25 years and I remember going into his classroom when I was young and seeing him in "action". I loved watching him make a difference in the lives of so many kids that I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps.

I have a degree in Elementary Education from West Chester University and a Masters degree in Education from Gratz College.

I have been teaching for 23 years in the same school district and I have taught 5th and 6th grade Math for all of those years. I have worked with all levels from students who struggle with math to advanced math students.

About the lesson

When I first meet a student I like to talk with the student and parent to get to know them and their needs in Math. I ask questions and try and get a sense of their overall basic knowledge of math skills. This usually only takes a few minutes. Speaking to the parent is always helpful because they know their child best.

I have worked with all ability levels. Currently I teach 6th grade math to students who struggle with math. I teach with a partner teacher and we work in small groups with students. I am a firm believer in hands on math. Students learn when they move around and manipulate materials. I have also worked with advanced students and on grade level students.

I truly believe that you have to have a teacher that believes in you and your success. A lot of students fear math. It is my job to help them to overcome that fear. Math is fun when you make connections to your every day life.

My most recent event that I am fond of is taking a field trip to the Lincoln Financial Field. We experienced a behing the scenes tour of the stadium and my students were in awe. They were so excited to learn about the stadium and to see where the Eagles play. They learned so much about the ecofriendly stadium and how math relates to the operation of the team. It was a memorable day for me because my students had a blast and they were able to make memories.
