About Leah

Hi, I’m Leah! I recently graduated cum laude from the State University at Albany with a B.S. in Human Development and a concentration in Special Education. During my education, I learned about the various developmental needs of children and various instructional methods for them to be successful. I have always loved working with younger students, and seeing a student thrive is my passion. It’s wonderful seeing a student perk up when they find something new and exciting, or watching them learn new ideas they love.

I have 3+ years’ experience tutoring students from diverse backgrounds and ages across many different settings. I find that a one-on-one connection is incredibly effective for the student because it reduces anxiety, distractions and creates a warmer, friendlier environment that promotes learning. I implement multifaceted and flexible learning lessons tailored to the student’s needs or academic focus. My goal is to give students the scaffolding they need to solve any problem thrown at them and the confidence to persist despite any academic challenges.

I have always loved observing and connecting with children because they are just so interesting. It never ceases to amaze me how much we “adults” take what we know for granted. I love seeing a student perk up when they find something new and exciting, or watching them learn new ideas that help them describe their world. The most rewarding aspect of teaching is seeing a student moving on and growing beyond what they thought was possible.

I have over 3 years of tuturoing experience across diverse backgrounds and envionrments and know how to make effective lesson plans.

About the lesson

I like to kick off the tutoring process with a simple, casual conversation with the student and the primary caretaker to get a feel for the specific goals and needs they wish to address. What are the problem areas we need to work on? What expectations do both parties have? What are we nervous or excited about? Next, I like to set some SMART goals and create a schedule that we can stick to. After that, we jump right in!

I have worked with ages as young as 3 and as old as 14 years old. I have also had extensive experience working with students with exceptional and behavioral needs.

Find someone who you feel "gets" you. If you don't have a connection then how can you really learn from them? Learning is often very emotional for some students and a teacher should be sensitive to this as they go about tutoring. You should always feel a little bit better about a subject than when you started tutoring with the instructor.

One of my first grade students that I often tutored was having a difficult time reading. We sat down together after school almost every day and made a game out of how many books we can read. He eventually had a word "explosion" and I got to witness it. He read me an entire book and said "I didn't even need your help once!" He was blown away by himself. When he told his mom he was beaming and she was so happy to see him happy. I got to see his confidence bloom and after that we couldnt tear him away from any book he was reading.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The first question a student should think through is “what do I know?” If you attack a problem with something you do know about it, it can help you figure out what you need to know. That is where the teacher comes in. If you have a specific question, you will get a specific answer. Sometimes a student may not even know where to begin, but a teacher can usually point them in the right direction.
