About Tom

I have been passionately dedicated for over 38 years to helping people meet Spanish and English language goals. I provide clients with outstanding online and offline tutoring in Spanish and English as a Second Language, as well as high-quality Spanish/English translation and interpretation services. Before launching my own business in 2007, I was a mid-level supervisor and senior Spanish analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense for 26 years. My consistency, timeliness, and subject matter expertise help make seemingly insurmountable tasks possible to overcome.

- Wicomico High School (September 1973 through June 1977) Date of Graduation: 1 June 1977

- Salisbury University (September 1977 through May 1981) Date of Graduation: 23 May 1981
Degree: Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Spanish

- American Institute For Spanish Studies in Valencia, Spain, Valencia, Spain, September 1979 - May 1980. Spanish immersion program affiliated with Salisbury University, American Institute For Spanish Studies in Valencia Spain, and Universitat De Valencia. Lived with Spanish family off campus and attended advanced studies courses at Universitat de Valencia for one year.

- Oxford Seminars, Baltimore, Maryland, January 2008 - March 2008. Seminar on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Course held at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, on weekends for nine hours per day. Completion certificate available on request.

- I will provide information on request regarding individual courses I took to improve my teaching skills while employed at local schools.

About the lesson

Tutoring

1. Free Introductory Meeting: Establish clear mutual expectations & goals, pricing (including travel expenses if applicable), hours, schedule, meeting location, & probable amount of lessons needed. Set up a list of topics to cover each day. Lesson plans.

2. Paid Lessons: We will have a clear syllabus for each session with things we hope to cover. Every attempt will be made to stay on schedule, but if something takes longer than expected or a reschedule is needed, then the syllubus can be modifed.

3. Practice, practice, practice.

4. Periodic testing to ensure that learning goals are being met.

5. Always open to suggestions for tailoring lessons as we progress. Feedback is extremely important for both client & company.

Translations

1. Intial Meeting: Establish expectations, deadlines, formatting requirements & pricing. Written contract if requested.

2. Work on the project: Client & customer will have a point of contact to iron out any changes, issues, or questions while work is in progress.

3. Notification of completion of project: Establish where to pick up or deliver the finished product, allow time for client to review it.

4. Collect fees: As established in written or verbal contract.

Interpretation

1. Initial meeting: Establish type of interpretation, time most likely required, location, expectations, times. Almost always written contracts for these jobs.

2. Travel to location: Check in, meet key people involved in process especially the client(s), understand client's needs, make client aware of exactly how I can help.

3. Interpretation process: Self explantory. Once this is completed, sign out & collect fees from hiring party.

4. Depart.

Details

My standard fee is $35 per hour or portion of an hour per person for tutoring or interpretation. The see for translations is $30 per every hour or portion of an hour needed to complete the project; this is estimated during the inital meeting based on length and difficulty of content and formatting.
