About Patricia

I was an elementary school teacher, mostly second and third grades, for twenty years~ all at the same school. I have recently retired but missed teaching so much that now I tutor online. I enjoy helping kids understand Math better AND to become better readers. My goal is to create LIFELONG LEARNERS through my enthusiasm and delight in teaching and reaching all kinds of kids. Here's my LinkedIn profile where you can see my qualifications, resume and credentials. (concealed information)

I have always wanted to be a teacher, even as a child! I started college in Rhode Island then moved to California. I completed my bachelor's degree then attended Chapman University for my teaching credential. About 15 years ago, I got my Masters in Reading and Fluency. I got my first teaching job in 1999 after subbing for the District for three months. I served at the same school for twenty years.

I was a public school teacher for twenty years. I have a Masters Degree in Reading and Fluency. I have been an online tutor for two years, teaching both Language Arts and Math to grades K through 5.

First, I like to get to know my student a little bit. I need to find out what he/she thinks they are good at and where they need some help. I can make kids relax a little bit and begin by showing some simple samples. Whether I'm working with reading or Math, I try to establish with new students that I am here to help them and it's okay to make mistakes or not know the answer because I will always help them to find the answers. I help kids to know that THEY can do the Math, or THEY can find the answers in the text. I want kids to be comfortable with me and look forward to our next session.

I've worked with all kids of students. I've had physically challenged and medically fragile students fully included in my classrooms. I have worked with students who knew NO ENGLISH when they started with me; Spanish, Arabic, Korean and Romanian speakers who caught on quickly with my ELD lessons. I've worked with generally intensive at-risk-of-failing students and always saw improvements. I have worked with Gifted and Talented students as well. I've worked with autistic and ADHD students on a regular basis.

I would tell the student to choose someone you feel comfortable with. Someone that has confidence but seems kind and nuturing.

Recently, my friend from Rhode Island came to visit me here in California. We took the MetroLink to Hollywood and saw the Famous Wax Museum and the Hollywood letters. She was thrilled! Then on the way back, we missed the train! What a story!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students can sometimes get focused on the wrong thing. Before talking about your needs to a teacher, make sure you know what it is you are seeking; what results would make you satisfied. Have one focused question in mind and have some ideas of what you would be willing to do to succeed. Sometimes, kids get confused between emotions they are experiencing due to circumstance and the real cirsumstance.
