About Mikaela

Mathematics has something for everyone, and the process of learning is an end in and of its self.

My first career was as an Artist for ten years, then I spent four years building software for a small blockchain startup based in Williamsburg. Most recently, I decided to leave my engineering job so that I could travel, ski, learn to how to backpack, spend more time with my family, and rekindle my love of sewing and baking.

I’m interested in working with learners who are curious and invested in their own learning. Most folks I work with have clear memories of when or why math became too hard, seemingly pointless, or intimidating. My goal is for a learner to discover their own path and rekindle the confidence or interest they once had with numbers. Some learners get tripped up early on with foundational number sense. Others make it to Algebra only to realize their mathematical intuition is non-existent. Either way, it’s important for a learner to be given the assistance and time they need to grasp the concepts in their own way. Confidence is essential when a learner begins to dip their toe into Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. At this stage, understanding the “why” or the “how” is often critical for maintaining momentum in math. However, the pace of traditional schooling does not often allow students the luxury of time.

Tutoring is more than an opportunity for remedial learning. It is, perhaps most importantly, an opportunity to indulge the learner of these luxuries and to cultivate an inquisitive mind.

Number sense is important for day to day life, but Mathematics teaches us how to think, to solve problems, and to create a path even when there is no end or answer in sight.
