About Tom
I am a certified social studies teacher in WA. I am a practicioner of student-centered learning. So I prefer to tailor instruction to the needs of students rather than being held to a rigid curriculum. I also believe in challenging students to develop the essential skill of inquiry. I ask questions that make students THINK!
I am a life long learner and getting students engaged in learning is tremendously rewarding for me.
I have 10 years experience teaching social studies for grades 6-12. The foundation of my teaching philosophy is to make the learning relevant to each student. I want students to understand the why of the content is important and not just the who and the what.

Most important is establishing a good learning relationship. That means getting a chance to learn a little about each other. I like to know a student's learning style - how that student likes to learn. Some learn by taking notes, others by seeing video examples, some my doing small projects. This enables me to tailor the content. We also need to decide what needs to be learned. Once the we are comfortable with each other, I can then tailor the content in a manner which is most effective for the student.
